New Zealand secured their second consecutive victory in the World Cup mission. After defeating England, the Kiwis strengthened the top position of the table by defeating the Netherlands by a large margin.
Chasing a target of 323 in Hyderabad on Monday (October 9), the Dutch were bowled out for 223 in 46.3 overs by Mitchell Santner’s whirlwind magic. Santner picked up 5 wickets as the first bowler of the tournament at the cost of 59 runs in 10 overs. Besides, Matt Henry seized 3 wickets at the cost of 40 runs.
Chasing a big target, the Dutch batters had to face the bowling canon of the Kiwi bowlers from the beginning of the day. Vikramjit Singh was bowled by Henry after scoring 12 runs off 20 balls. Another opener Max O’Dowd was trapped leg before with 16 off 31 balls. Bas de Leede was caught on the boundary while trying to hit a six off Rachin Ravindra for the team’s 67 runs. He scored 18 runs off 25 balls.
Colin Ackermann continued to fight for the team keeping one end safe. However, Teja Nidamanuru could not accompany him. He got run out for 21 off 26 balls. When Ackermann also returned to the dressing room with the team’s 157 runs, the Netherlands slipped out of the fight. He played an innings of 69 runs off 73 balls hitting 5 fours.
In the end, captain Scott Edwards’ 27-ball 30 and Sybrand Engelbrecht’s 34-ball 29-run innings reduced the margin of defeat. With this, the Dutch lost all five matches against the Kiwis that they’ve played.
Earlier, New Zealand won the toss at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and proved wrong the decision of the Netherlands to take the fielding at the end of the scheduled 50 overs. Despite giving maidens in the first three overs, two Kiwi openers Devon Conway and Will Young put up 67 runs on the scoreboard within 12 overs.
The Dutch got their first wicket in the 13th over. Conway was caught at wide long-on as he was trying to pick up the delivery by Roelof van der Merwe. His innings ended at 32 runs off 40 balls, with 5 fours and 1 six. Young, another opener, picked up a fifty. He departed in the 27th over after forming a pair of 77 runs with Ravindra for the second wicket. He scored 70 off 80 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes before being caught at mid-on by Paul van Meekeren.
Ravindra, who scored a century in the previous match, picked up a fifty before getting out. His 51 off 51 balls came with 3 fours and 1 six before Van der Merwe got him in the 33rd over.
After his departure, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham added another 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Mitchell returned with 48 runs off 47 balls but Latham picked up his fifty. 53 runs came from his bat off 46 balls, he scored 6 fours and 1 six. In the end, the Kiwis collected 300 plus runs in a stormy innings of 36 runs from 17 balls by Mitchell Santner.
Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren, and Roelof van der Merwe took 2 wickets each against the Kiwis with the ball in hand. Apart from this, Bas de Leede took 1 wicket for the Netherlands.
Earlier, New Zealand beat England by 9 wickets in their first match. With two big wins in a row, they cemented their place at the top of the table. On the other hand, the Dutch are pointless after losing against the Black Caps after Pakistan.
