Bangladesh and Ireland met in the second ODI at Chelmsford in England on Friday (May 12). It rained before the commencement of the match. That’s why the match was reduced from 50 overs to 45 overs. Batting first, the Irish collected 319 runs after losing 6 wickets in 45 overs. In response, Bangladesh reached the port of victory by losing 7 wickets in 44.3 overs.  

 

India scored 247 against Australia in 1983 in an ODI at Chelmsford. It was the highest team total at this venue so far. However, in the second ODI against Bangladesh, Ireland broke the record of Team India by scoring 319 runs. Then Bangladesh broke the Irish history of collecting 320 runs.  

 

Batting with the aim of scoring big runs, Bangladesh got a shock at the beginning. Captain Tamim Iqbal was out for 9 runs. And Liton Das returned with 21 runs off 21 balls. He was dismissed for the team’s 40 runs. After Liton, Shakib Al Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto made a partnership of 61 runs off 47 balls.

 

In the 17th over, Shakib was caught by George Dockrell in the last ball of Curtis Campher. He returned to the dressing room scoring 26 runs off 27 balls, after that Shanto and Towhid Hridoy’s brilliant batting display turned around Bangladesh’s innings. Their partnership scored 131 runs off 102 balls. And from there, team Tiger took the driver’s seat in the match. 

 

Shanto picked up the first century of his ODI career off 83 balls. And Hridoy made the second fifty of his career. But Hridoy got out after Shanto’s century. He was dismissed for 68 off 58 balls. Shanto returned to the pavilion after playing a match-winning innings of 257 runs for the team. He scored 117 runs off 93 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes. 

 

Finally, the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim completed the rest of the work. He scored an unbeaten 36 off 28 balls with the help of 4 boundaries and left the field winning the game for his team. George Dockrell and Curtis Campher took the maximum number of 2 wickets each for the Irish. Besides, Mark Adair, Joshua Little, and Graham Hume took 1 wicket each.  

 

getting down to bat first after losing the toss, Ireland lost the wicket in the first over of the innings. Opener Paul Stirling (0) returned to the pavilion after being caught off pacer Hasan Mahmud on the fifth ball of the over. After his departure, Stephen Doheny and Andrew Balbirnie tried to build the Irish innings. But when the two added 15 more runs to the scoreboard, Hasan struck again. This time Doheny (12 off 21 balls) became his victim. 

 

After that, Balbirnie and Harry Tector’s pair started spinning the wheels of Ireland’s runs. Tector got life in the team’s 56 runs and got a half-century off 52 balls. Bangladesh got the wicket of Balbirnie immediately after scoring the team’s hundred. The Irish skipper was caught by the Tigers’ wicketkeeper for a personal 42 off pacer Shoriful Islam.  

 

Lorcan Tucker, who was batting aggressively, was sent back to the dressing room by Shoriful. Tucker scored 16 runs off 11 balls. Then Taijul Islam trapped Campher (8) lbw for the team’s 167 runs.  

After Campher’s departure, Ireland continued to collect runs rampantly keeping wickets safe. Tector and Dockrell were both terrifying. Tector completed his century with 93 balls. The batsman became more devastating after scoring the century. In the end, Tector returned to the pavilion after scoring 140 runs off 112 balls. He played this outstanding innings with 7 fours and 10 sixes.  

 

Dockrell, on the other hand, remained undefeated in the end. He played in a stormy innings of 74 runs off 47 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes. Mark Adair scored 20 runs. The team’s total reached 319 runs. Bangladesh secured a great victory by crossing that total. Along with that, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
