Chennai Super Kings didn’t get off to a good start with a change in the opening. Another opener Rachin Ravindra could not shine with the bat like Ajinkya Rahane. However, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dubey turned the match in the third wicket. Chennai gave Mumbai a huge target in the devastating batting of the two.
Mustafiz’s Chennai faced Mumbai at Wankhede on Sunday (April 14). Chennai set Mumbai a target of 207 runs at the end of the first innings.
Instead of regular opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahane came to open with Ravindra yesterday. But he could not last long. Rahane returned to the dressing room after being victimized by Gerald Coetzee for 8 runs.
After Rahane’s departure, Ravindra and Gaikwad made a partnership of 52 runs for the second wicket. Ravindra returned with 21 runs off 16 balls and that pair was broken. Then Dube-Gaikwad made a big pair for the third wicket. That pair of 90 runs off 45 balls gave the team the basis for a big collection.
After making 69 runs off 39 balls with 5 sixes and 5 fours Gaikwad returns to the dressing room by Hardik Pandya. Following his exit, the run rate somewhat decreased. However, in the end, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s cameo innings made Chennai reach the 200-run mark.
Dhoni hit three sixes in the first three balls after batting in the 20th over. The star batsman took 2 runs off the fourth ball of his game. He remained unbeaten with 20 runs off 4 balls. Dube was also undefeated until the end. He scored 66 runs off 38 balls.
Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly despite not getting any wickets. He gave only 27 runs in 4 overs on a run-pros wicket. Gerald Coetzee bowled 4 overs for 35 runs, with one wicket also in his possession. Mumbai captain Hardik Pandya got 2 wickets with 43 runs in 3 overs.
Mumbai got off to a great start chasing a huge target. 70 runs came from the opening pair of Rohit and Kishan. But Pathirana took two wickets in one over and put Mumbai under pressure. Although Rohit was playing at one end, the others could not support him.
Rohit Sharma ended up unbeaten on 105 off 63 balls.
Pathirana took 4 wickets for 28 runs for Chennai. After this win, Chennai is third in the table with 8 points in 6 matches. Mumbai Indians are eighth in the table with 4 points in the same match.
