India ended the series with a 1-1 draw and a record-breaking victory over South Africa in the final T20I of the three-match series. The visitors beat the Proteas by a huge margin of 106 runs. India has never won against South Africa by such a big margin before this.
India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav joined team-mate Rohit Sharma and Australia’s batsman Glenn Maxwell by scoring a great century on this day. Yesterday’s century in T20I is Surya’s fourth career century. Apart from these three cricketers, no other cricketer has scored more centuries in international T20. So far, this record was shared by Rohit and Maxwell. This time Surya has shared the record by playing the least (60) matches.
India got off to a great start after losing the toss to bat in the series-saving match in Johannesburg on Thursday. Suryakumar’s team scored 29 runs in the first two overs. In the third over, left-handed orthodox bowler Keshav Maharaj struck a pair. He took two wickets in two balls. This spinner returned Shubman Gill for 8 runs (6 balls) and Tilak Varma for 0 runs (1 ball).
Then Surya made a great partnership of 112 runs off 70 balls with opener Yasshwi Jaswal in the fourth over. Jaswal returned with 60 off 41 balls (6 fours and 3 sixes) and the Indian captain made another partnership of 47 runs with Rinku Singh. Suryakumar got out on the very next ball after scoring a 56-ball century with great batting. The Indian captain’s 100-run 56-ball century was decorated with 7 fours and 8 sixes. Rinku also scored 14 runs. In the end, the Indians stopped at 201 after losing 7 wickets.
In response, South Africa could not score any runs in the first over bowled by Mohammad Siraj. Opener Riza Henriques came with 8 runs off 13 balls in the second over. South Africa then lost wickets at regular intervals. In the end, the Proteas were bundled out for 95 runs in 13.5 overs. David Miller scored 35 off 25 balls for the team. Besides, Aiden Markram scored 25 runs from 14 balls with 3 fours and one six and Donovan Ferreira scored 12 runs off 11 balls.
Kuldeep Yadav took the maximum 5 wickets (at the cost of 17 runs) for India. This is his career-best bowling figures. Keshav Maharaj and Lizard Williams took 2 wickets each for South Africa.
