In the 58th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, Nicholas Pooran’s stormy batting display destroyed Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) climbed up to the fourth place in the points table with a big triumph by 7 wickets on the devastating batting of the Caribbean batsman.

 

Chasing the target of 183 runs given by the Sunrisers on Saturday (May 13), Super Giants reached the port of victory with 4 balls in hand courtesy of Pooran. In the run chase, LSG lost opener Kyle Mayers for the team’s 12 runs. He was caught by Glenn Phillips scoring just 2 runs off 14 balls. Super Giants batsmen could score only 30 runs in 6 overs of power play after losing 1 wicket.

 

After that, Prerak Mankad and Quinton de Kock did not allow any more wickets to fall but they failed to increase the scoring rate. As a result, they were going on the back foot lagging in the fight. When de Kock (29 off 19 balls) was dismissed, the Super Giants’ total was 54 runs in 8.2 overs. Mankad then tried to form a partnership with Aussie all-rounder Marcus Stoinis for the third wicket.

 

But Stoinis also got out in 15.3 overs leaving the team total at 127 runs. He scored 40 off 25 balls, hitting 2 fours and 3 sixes before being dismissed. When LSG needed 56 off the last 27 balls to win, Pooran came to the wicket. He hit Abhishek Sharma for three consecutive sixes. The required runs in the last 24 balls were reduced to 38 runs.

 

Pooran was accompanied by another set batter Mankad. The duo put on an unbroken stand of 58 runs off 23 balls for the fourth wicket. Whereas Mankad contributed only 14 runs from 10 balls. But in the end, Pooran’s batting prowess stopped ensuring the victory of the team. He remained unbeaten on 44 off 13 balls, with just 3 fours and 4 sixes.

 

On the other hand, Mankad left the field with 7 fours and 2 sixes, playing an unbeaten match-winning innings of 64 runs off 45 balls. He was also selected as the player of the match. Glenn Phillips, Mayank Markande, and Abhishek Sharma took 1 wicket each for LSG.

 

After winning the toss and batting first, the Sunrisers collected a challenging score of 182 runs after losing 6 wickets at the end of the scheduled 20 overs. The team’s highest scorer wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen scored 47 runs off 29 balls. Where there were equal numbers of 3 boundaries and over boundaries.

 

Besides, Abdul Samad scored 37 from 25 balls, Anmolpreet Singh made 36 from 27 balls, captain Aiden Markram collected 28 from 20 balls, and Rahul Tripathi scored 20 runs from 13 balls. On behalf of LSG, captain Krunal Pandya took the maximum number of 2 wickets at the cost of 24 runs in 4 overs. Apart from this, Yudhvir Singh, Avesh Khan, Yash Thakur, and Amit Mishra took one wicket each.

 

Meanwhile, LSG is still in the race for qualifiers after defeating SRH. They have overtaken Rajasthan Royals (RR) to move up to the 4th position in the points table. After 12 matches, LSG has 13 points. RR has one point less taking part in an equal number of matches. SRH is in the 9th position in the standings securing 8 points playing 11 matches.

 

Gujarat Titans (GT) are at the top of the points table with 16 points from 12 matches. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are in the 2nd position with 15 points and Mumbai Indians (MI) are in the 3rd position with 14 points.
