Pacer Arshdeep Singh could have been the hero by picking up the victory for Punjab Kings (PBKS). But Shimron Hetmyer did not give him a chance. Hetmyer brought up a 3-wicket win for Rajasthan Royals (RR) with one ball in hand in a brilliant innings of 27 runs from 10 balls.
Cricket lovers enjoyed a breathtaking match in the 27th match of IPL on Saturday (April 13). The Kings and Royals had a fifty-fifty chance of winning till the last over of the game. But RR had the last laugh. Chasing 148 runs, they lost 7 wickets and clinched victory in 19.5 overs.
The Royals are performing great in the current season. Gujarat Titans (GT) tasted their first loss after four straight wins. However, PBKS could not stop them after getting a chance at home. Chasing 148 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the team a flying start. When he got out, scoring 39 runs off 28 balls with 4 fours, the team’s total was 82 runs for the loss of 2 wickets after 11.4 overs.
Another opener Tanush Kotian got out scoring 24 runs off 31 balls. Captain Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag took charge of the team after the departure of the two openers. At the end of 13 overs, the team’s collection stood at 88 runs. The match was one-sided till then. But from the 14th over, PBKS returned to the fight gradually. Kagiso Rabada sent off Samson who scored 18 runs off 14 balls. He conceded only 2 runs in this over.
Arshdeep Singh picked up the wicket of Parag on the 17th over. He scored 23 runs off 18 balls. Harshal Patel’s victim Dhruv Jurel scored 6 runs off 11 balls in the next over. As a result, the Royals were under pressure. By handling the pressure well, Hetmyer and Rovman Powell kept the team on the road to victory. The team needed 33 runs from 16 balls and they took the equation to just 12 runs from 10 balls.
But after that, Sam Curran picked up 2 wickets in a row to give the PBKS camp hope of victory. Powell scored 11 runs in 5 balls and Keshav Maharaj got out with 1 run in 2 balls. 10 runs were needed in the last over to win. Arshdeep boosted the hopes of PBKS by beating Hetmyer who was on strike in the first two balls.
The Royals needed 10 runs off the last 4 balls. The Kings have a chance to snatch the win only if Hetmyer could be sent back. But after that, Arshdeep could not keep the rhythm. Hetmyer picked up sixes, twos, and sixes with one ball in hand to give RR a breathtaking victory.
As a result, Samson’s team maintains the top position of the points table with 8 points from 4 wins in 5 matches. Rabada took 2 wickets for just 18 runs in great bowling for the Kings. Curran took 2 wickets at the cost of 25 runs.
Earlier, PBKS managed to score 147 runs after losing 8 wickets after 20 overs under the controlled bowling of Trent Boult and Keshav Maharaj. Ashutosh Sharma scored the highest number of 31 runs facing 16 balls for the team. Besides, Jitesh Sharma scored 29 off 24 balls and Liam Livingstone scored 21 off 14 balls.
Avesh Khan took the maximum number of 2 wickets for RR at the cost of 34 runs. But Boult and Maharaj bowled well. Boult gave 22 and Maharaj gave 23 runs, both of them scalped one wicket each. Meanwhile, PBKS is in eighth position with this loss at home. They have secured 4 points from 2 wins in 5 matches.
