Australia did not get off to a good start chasing the medium target delivered by India. However, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne took the helm in the middle overs. These two Aussie batsmen have completely dominated the Indian bowlers, who have been bowling brilliantly throughout the tournament. Australia has become the World Cup champion for the sixth time in the presence of millions of spectators at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Australia won their sixth World Cup title at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (November 19). Chasing the target of 241 runs given by India, Australia won by 6 wickets with 7 overs in hand.
The moderate target set by India seemed like a mountain high for Australia after the power play. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami sent back three Aussie batsmen in 7 overs. From there, the Aussies’ match-winning hero was Travis Head. He scored 137 runs off 120 balls smashing 15 fours and 4 sixes.
Australia scored 15 runs in the first over coming down to chase the total set by the opponents. But in the second over, Shami sent off David Warner in the first ball he came to bowl. Warner scored 7 runs in 3 balls.
Mitchell Marsh started to raise a storm into the crease after Warner’s departure. But that storm did not last long. Bumrah’s third ball of the fifth over gently kissed Marsh’s bat and landed in the hands of the wicketkeeper. Marsh returned with 1 four and a six, he made 15 runs from 15 balls. Bumrah also sent back Steven Smith in the last ball of the seventh over. Smith got out scoring 4 runs off 9 balls.
Head and Labuschagne formed an incredible pair for the third wicket. In the face of danger, the two made a pair of 192 runs. And the Aussies chased the target down without any fear. When Australia needed 2 runs to win, Head was dismissed. Glenn Maxwell played the winning shot on the first ball that he faced.
Earlier, after losing the toss and batting first, India lost the wicket of Shubman Gill at the start of batting. He got out for just 4 runs. The opener was caught by Adam Zampa off Mitchell Starc. Despite Shubman’s return, Rohit Sharma was increasing India’s run count in the powerplay by hitting boundaries. But before the end of 10 overs, he got out due to a poor shot selection. Rohit scored 47 runs off 31 balls.
Shreyas Iyer hit four on the second ball as he came into the wicket. But he could not last long. The batsman was caught by Josh Inglis behind the wicket on the third ball of his game.
After losing 3 wickets before 100 runs, Virat Kohli was managing the disaster of the team with KL Rahul. However, after picking up the fifty, this right-handed batsman was bowled by Pat Cummins for 54 runs.
After Kohli’s departure, the run rate dropped completely. Rahul then made a pair of 30 runs with Ravindra Jadeja. However, in the 36th over, the pair broke when Jadeja returned with a catch behind the wicket on Josh Hazlewood’s short-length delivery.
Rahul also came back under pressure (66). India lost two more wickets by 11 runs after he departed for the team’s 203 runs. Suryakumar Yadav remained the only hope on the wicket. However, he could not do anything for the essentials of the team. He returned to the pavilion with Hazlewood scoring 18 runs off 28 balls.
India was in danger of being all out before the end of the over. However, Rohit’s team batted 50 overs avoiding that fear with the bat of Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. However, Kuldeep (10) was run out in the last ball.
However, Travis Head was named the player of the match after playing a daring innings in the second half. On the other hand, Virat Kohli was adjudged Player of the Series for his stunning performance throughout the tournament.
