The IPL continues to run wild. This time, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens. The match of about 450 runs got excited in the last over. Bengaluru almost surpassed Kolkata’s big target. But in the end, the visitors had to leave the field with a loss.
Host Kolkata Knight Riders cruised to a 1-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Eden Gardens on Sunday (April 21). Bengaluru won the toss and sent Kolkata into bat. Kolkata collected 222 runs losing 6 wickets in scheduled 20 overs. In reply, Bengaluru scored 221 runs before being all out in the last ball of the 20th over.
Kolkata got off to a stormy start with the bat of Phil Salt. The hosts scored 56 runs on the scoreboard before got out in the second ball of the fifth over. Salt was dismissed by Mohammad Siraj after scoring 48 runs in just 14 balls. His innings had 7 fours and 3 sixes.
Sunil Narine, another opener, fell victim to Yash Dayal after 66 runs. Narine, the centurion of the previous match, scored 10 runs in 15 balls that day. Kolkata lost the wicket of Angkrish Raghuvanshi (3) in the last ball of the power play. Before that, however, 75 runs were accumulated on the scoreboard.
Venkatesh Iyer also created a storm. But he became Green’s victim by scoring 16 runs off 8 balls. The pair of captain Shreyas Iyer and impact player Rinku Singh added 40 runs off 29 balls. Rinku scored 24 runs off 16 balls and was dismissed by Lockie Ferguson.
Captain Shreyas opened his arms after Rinku’s departure. He completed his half-century before his dismissal at 179 runs. He scored 50 runs off 36 balls with 7 fours and 1 six.
Andre Russell was a bit out of sorts on that day, but Ramandeep stormed towards the end and brought Kolkata a big collection. He scored 24 runs off 9 balls with 2 fours and sixes. Russell scored 27 runs off 20 balls with 4 fours.
In the 2nd innings, Virat Kohli stormed down to chase the big target. He became a victim of Harshit Rana by scoring 18 runs off 7 balls with 1 four and 2 sixes. Captain Faf du Plessis also departed after scoring only 7 runs.
After that, Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar return Bengaluru to the match. The duo added 102 runs off 48 balls in the third-wicket partnership. Russell broke the pair by returning Will Jacks. Jacks scored 55 runs off 32 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes. Russell also returned Patidar in the fourth ball of the same over. Patidar scored 52 runs in just 23 balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes.
In the next over, Sunil Narine sent Bengaluru on the back foot by picking up a pair of wickets. First, Cameron Green (6) got caught out by Ramandeep. Then Narine took the catch of Mahipal Lomror himself. Harshit Rana returned Suyash Prabhudessai (24 off 18) for 187 runs.
Then, Dinesh Karthik and Karn Sharma took the lead of Bengaluru who were almost losing. But in the last ball of the 19th over, Dinesh Karthik got out after scoring 25 runs off 18 balls. Still needed 20 runs from 6 balls to win.
Karn Sharma almost got the target. He picked up 18 runs off the first four balls of Mitchell Starc’s over with 3 sixes. But Mitchell Starc took a great catch on the fifth ball. Karn scored 20 runs off just 7 balls with 3 sixes. Then, Lockie Ferguson can take 1 run even if it takes two runs to win the last ball. He ran out to take the second run but got run out. Bengaluru had to burn in the disappointment of losing only by 1 run.
For Kolkata, Andre Russell took 3 wickets with 25 runs in 3 overs. Sunil Narine took 2 wickets after spending 34 runs in 4 overs. Harshit Rana also took 2 wickets for 33 runs. Besides, Mitchell Starc and Varun Chakraborty took 1 wicket each.
