Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (Match 69) – Highlights
Mumbai Indians (MI) had to win to stay upright in the playoff fight. But the target in front of Rohit Sharma’s team was huge. On the one hand, there was the pressure of the run rate and on the other hand, there was the pressure of the must-win game. Both of these made the pressure vast.
But Australian all-rounder Cameron Green handled all the pressure alone brilliantly. The 23-year-old all-rounder’s maiden IPL century made MI win the match with two overs to spare.
After losing the toss and batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) gave Mumbai a huge target of 201 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In response, Rohit Sharma, Cameron Green, and Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant batting brought up a win by 8 wickets for MI. With this victory, Rohit Sharma’s team kept the hope of the playoffs alive.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) got out of contention with this win of MI. MI now has 16 points from 14 matches. But the fear of MI is still not over. There is only one equation now for Rohit to reach the playoffs, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) must lose in their last match.
The openers of the Sunrisers gradually increased their run rate even though they batted cautiously in the beginning. Two openers Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal scored 53 runs in the power play. The run rate increased further after the power play. 75 runs were scored from the 7th to the 13th over.
Vivrant picked up his first fifty in IPL. He returned to the dressing room with 69 off 47 balls in the 14th over by Akash Madhwal, but SRH maintained the run rate. Vivrant’s opening partnership with Agarwal put up 140 runs on the board.
In 7-16 overs, SRH collected 115 runs in those middle 10 overs. This is their second-highest score at this stage of the innings in the team’s history in the IPL, the highest for them was 125 against RCB in 2019.
Even in the 17th over, SRH lost by 1 wicket and the score was 174 runs. But they lost 4 wickets to score only 26 runs off the last 21 balls of Madhwal’s great bowling. From projecting a score of 220-225 at one point, Sunrisers struggled to score 200 runs toward the end. But with the efforts of the captain, SRH finally reached the 200 mark.
In the 17th over bowled by Madhwal, Agarwal returned to the pavilion playing 46 balls to get 83 runs (4 fours and 4 sixes) and the Sunrisers fell into disarray. Coming down at number three, Heinrich Klaasen, Glenn Phillips, Aiden Markram, and Harry Brook could not make numerous runs in the middle order. These four together could score only 32 runs off 25 balls. Markram remained unbeaten with 13 runs off 7 balls.
Akash Madhwal took the highest number of four wickets for MI. Besides, Chris Jordan picked up a wicket.
MI didn’t get off to a good start chasing the big target. The team lost the wicket of Ishan Kishan (14) for the team’s 20 runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar sent off this left-handed opener. However, Ishan’s departure was later seen as a blessing for MI. Because Green started batting aggressively from the start as he came down to bat after one down.
MI scored 20 off the first 17 balls before he got out. After this aggressive batsman arrived, they scored 40 runs off the remaining 19 balls of the Powerplay. Rohit struggled a bit at first but slowly started adapting to the wicket and picked up fifty. The two put on a 128-run partnership for the 2nd wicket.
MI’s score was 148 in 13.1 overs when Rohit struck 69 off 47 balls and returned to the dressing room after falling victim to Mayank Dagar. The victory was very much in the hands of Rohit & Co. Green picked up the rest of the runs with Suryakumar.
Green scored eight fours and eight sixes in a whirlwind unbeaten innings of 100 off 47 balls. He was also adjudged as the player of the match. On the other hand, Suryakumar was unbeaten with 25 runs off 16 balls.
