Sunrisers Hyderabad, who entered the playoffs by showing power, failed to get to Kolkata Knight Riders. Shreyas Iyer’s Kolkata made it to the final after defeating Pat Cummins’ team in the first qualifier.
Kolkata beat Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the first qualifier at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (May 21). After winning the toss and batting first, Hyderabad scored 159 runs at the end of the first innings. In response, Kolkata crossed the target with 6 overs and 2 balls in hand.
Kolkata got off to a good start with two openers chasing a medium target. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine scored 44 runs in 3 overs in a flurry of batting. This pair made Kolkata’s run chase easy. In the fourth over, Natarajan returned Gurbaz (23) to the dressing room. However, Kolkata scored 63 runs in the powerplay.
Narine was dismissed by Cummins in the seventh over after the end of the powerplay. 21 runs off 16 balls came from his bat. After losing 2 wickets in quick time, the run rate of Kolkata increased instead of decreasing. Shreyas Iyer continued to score runs with Venkatesh Iyer.
Kolkata scored 107 runs losing 2 wickets in 10 overs. The team then needed 53 runs from 60 balls to win, with 8 wickets in hand. The champions of the two seasons of IPL did it with 3 over 4 balls. Venkatesh Iyer was unbeaten on 51 off 28 balls. Shreyas who scored 58 runs off 24 balls with 4 sixes and 5 fours left the field winning the match.

Coming down to bat, Hyderabad stumbled on the second ball of the innings. Travis Head was bowled by Mitchell Starc’s length ball before opening the run book. In the second over, Vaibhav Arora sent Abhishek Sharma back to the pavilion. He returned with a catch in the hands of Andre Russell after scoring 3 runs off 4 balls. In the entire tournament, these two openers kept the opponent under pressure from the beginning with devastating batting. However, at the beginning of the day, Hyderabad was under pressure due to the departure of the two.
Rahul Tripathi tried to handle the pressure after going down one down but Starc did not allow anyone to form a partnership with him. He quickly returned Nitish Kumar Reddy (9) and Shahbaz Ahmed (0) to the dressing room. Rahul took the team to a hundred by keeping one end. He was accompanied by Heinrich Klaasen for the fifth wicket. But Varun did not let them take complete control of the match. Klaasen was dismissed at 101 runs by scoring 32 runs off 21 balls. Rahul left the team with 121 runs after being run out. He scored 55 runs in 35 balls with 7 fours and 1 six.
There was a fear of being crushed before 150 runs in the Hyderabad camp. However, Orange Army captain Pat Cummins showed a glimpse at the end. He brought the team to 159 runs after losing 9 wickets for 126 runs. He was a victim of Russell in the last over of the innings by hitting 30 runs with 2 sixes and 2 fours in 24 balls.
