Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians (Eliminator) – Highlights
The last season ended with disappointment; this season also started with two consecutive defeats. Mumbai Indians (MI), the most successful team in IPL, felt the lack of their best bowler of the team, Jasprit Bumrah. However, Akash Madhwal did not let Rohit Sharma’s team down this time.
This young man played one of the main roles behind the team’s great turnaround at the end of the season. With his brilliant bowling, MI is now just one step away from the finals. Madhwal took 4 wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the previous match. Winning that match, Mumbai Indians made it to the top four.
However, Madhwal showed a bigger surprise yesterday. This right-arm medium pacer picked up 5 wickets conceding just 5 runs in 3.3 overs. This is the best bowling record in the IPL by a bowler who has not played international cricket.
The 29-year-old Madhwal’s record-breaking bowling helped MI to defeat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 81 runs in the eliminator match to go a step ahead in the race for the IPL final. The five-time champions will face defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the second qualifier on Friday.
MI won the toss and went into bat at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, they lost 8 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs and scored a challenging total of 182 runs. In response, the Super Giants batsmen faced the devastating bowling of Madhwal. As a result, LSG got all out after scoring only 101 runs in 16.3 overs.
Chasing the target of 183 runs, Super Giants lost two wickets early and fell under pressure. Captain Krunal Pandya accompanied Marcus Stoinis, but the left-handed batsman could not increase his scoring rate. After scoring 8 runs off 11 balls, he fell victim to Piyush Chawla and returned to the dressing room.
After Krunal’s dismissal, Ayush Badoni (1) and Nicholas Pooran (0) returned to the pavilion with a gap of just five runs. Stoinis was showing some hope to the team that lost 5 wickets for 74 runs. But when he got out after scoring 40 off 27 balls, LSG’s hopes to play in the finals shattered.
Akash Madhwal was adjudged the player of the match for taking 5 wickets. Chris Jordan and Piyush Chawla also took 1 wicket each for MI.
Earlier, the opening pair of MI scored 30 runs. Rohit departed after scoring 11 runs and Ishan Kishan was out for a personal 15 runs. Then Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav started batting stormily. While the team total was 104 runs, Suryakumar was caught by Krishnappa Gowtham near the boundary while trying to hit Naveen-ul-Haq for a six. He scored 33 runs off 20 balls.
Green departed after Suryakumar got out. This all-rounder scored 41 runs off 23 balls. After that, the team was eying Tilak Varma and Tim David, but David was disappointed. He left the field after scoring 13 runs off Yash Thakur’s ball. Tilak scored 26 runs off 22 balls. In the end, MI was able to make 182 thanks to Nehal Wadhera’s 23 runs off 12 balls.
Pacer Naveen-ul-Haq took the highest number of 4 wickets with 38 runs in 4 overs for LSG. Besides, Yash Thakur took 3 wickets and Mohsin Khan took one wicket.
