Bangladesh started the new cycle of the World Test Championship by defeating powerful New Zealand by a big margin. The Tiger’s hero is spinner Taijul Islam with the ball on his way to his first win in white against the Kiwis on home soil. He has seen the 12th fifer in his test career.
Bangladesh beat New Zealand by 150 runs in the Sylhet Test on Saturday (December 2). Chasing 332 runs, the second innings of the Kiwis stopped at 181 runs in the first session of the fifth day. Taijul took 6 wickets alone. With this victory, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Bangladesh’s victory was almost certain on the fourth day. New Zealand lost 7 wickets to score only 113 runs against the Tiger spinners. They needed 219 runs to win on the final day. Darryl Mitchell was unbeaten on 44 runs at the crease. However, Naeem Hassan did not allow him to stay for long. In the tenth over of the day, the batsman was caught by Taijul at backward square while playing a sweep to the Tiger spinner. His innings stopped at 58 runs off 120 balls with 7 fours. He was the only fifty for the Kiwis in the second innings.
Then skipper Tim Southee stopped at the crease and batted aggressively. This caused some fear in the Tiger camp. But Taijul did not let him go too far. He scored 34 runs off 24 balls with 2 sixes and 1 four. He was caught by Zakir Hasan. He is the second-highest run-scorer for the team in this inning. The second innings of the Kiwis ended when Ish Sodhi, who was unbeaten on 7 runs off 24 balls the previous day, played an innings of 22 runs off 91 balls.
Taijul picked up 6 wickets at the cost of 75 runs for Bangladesh. Earlier he took 4 wickets in the first innings. Naeem Hasan took 2 wickets. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shariful Islam took 1 wicket each.
Earlier, Bangladesh scored 310 runs in the first innings thanks to Mahmudul Hasan’s innings of 86 runs. And in the second innings, the Tigers collected 338 runs with Nazmul Hossain Shanta’s century and Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy’s fifties. In the first innings, with Kane Williamson’s century, they took 317 runs and they got a target of 332 runs.
Bangladesh has tasted its second victory in 18 Tests against New Zealand. In the first win, they got the victory in the opposition’s field.
The next operation of Shanto forces is in Mirpur of Dhaka. The second match of the series will be played on December 6. Shanta, who won the first test match as captain, now has a chance to make history by winning the team’s first test series against New Zealand.
