Bangladesh continues its poor performance in the World Cup. After back-to-back defeats, the Tigers also suffered a humiliating loss against comparatively weaker opponents Netherlands at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata (October 28) on Saturday. Bangladesh lost by 87 runs chasing the target of 230 runs given by the Dutch.
Bangladesh has played 6 matches in the World Cup so far. Shakib Al Hasan’s team won only one of them. The Tigers are in the ninth position of the points table with 2 points. Even if they win all the matches from here, there is no way for the Tigers to go to the semi-finals. So, Bangladesh’s exit from the World Cup is only a matter of time.
In response to 230 runs, Bangladesh lost 2 wickets for 19 runs after going down to bat. Litton Das got out with just 3 runs off 12 balls. Litton wanted to play a reverse sweep off Aryan Dutt in 4.2 overs. But the ball hit his glove and the catch went up. Scott Edwards gloved it from behind the wicket.
Another opener Tanzid Hasan returned to the dressing room a little later. He scored 15 runs off 16 balls. Like Litton, he gave the catch behind the wicket while playing a pull shot off Logan van Beek. That too was successfully caught by Edwards.
Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed by Paul van Meekeren for the team’s 45 runs in 11.5 overs. He was trying to play a full-length ball outside the off stump. But he was caught at slip finding an edge of the bat. On this side, Shakib paid the price for the mistake as tried to put the bat on a bouncy delivery from Meekeren whilst the team was in danger. Shakib returned to the pavilion with a catch in the hands of the wicketkeeper.
After Shakib, Mehidy Hasan Miraz also returned to the pavilion. The wicketkeeper also caught him. Miraz, who scored 35 runs off 40 balls, gout out to increase the woes for the Bangladesh team. Then Mushfiqur Rahim was undone on the day. He returned with 1 run from 5 balls. Bangladesh lost 6 wickets to score only 70 runs.
Mahmudullah tried a little with Mahedi Hasan. However, the hope of Bangladesh ended when Mahedi returned to the dressing room with a great throw of Bas de Leede. When Mahmudullah returned making 20 runs, losing Bangladesh became a matter of time. In the end, Bangladesh’s innings stopped at 142 runs.
Paul van Meekeren was adjudged the player of the match for picking up the maximum number of 4 wickets for the Dutch. Apart from this, Bas de Leede snapped up 2 wickets and Colin Ackermann, Logan van Beek, and, Aryan Dutt took 1 wicket each.
Earlier, Bangladesh put pressure on the Netherlands in the beginning as they bowled first. As soon as 4 runs were added to the team scorecard, the Dutch were under pressure after losing two openers. Opener Vikramjit Singh (3) returned to the dressing room by Taskin Ahmed on the fourth ball of the second over of the innings. Taskin returned to the wicket after two matches after recovering from a shoulder injury.
Shoriful Islam gave Bangladesh their second success in the next over by sending off Max O’Dowd. Coming down at three, Wesley Barresi started the counterattack. Mustafizur Rahman sent him back to Bangladesh again in the match. Barresi got out after scoring 41 runs off 41 balls. In the next over, Shakib got the wicket of another set batter, Ackermann (15).
After that, Leede and skipper Edwards made a partnership of 44 runs from 74 balls. Taskin broke the pair and put pressure on the Netherlands again. Leede (17) returned with a catch in the hands of wicketkeeper Mushfiq for the team’s 107 runs. Then Sybrand Engelbrecht and Edwards tried to pull the Netherlands for there.
Edwards was out scoring 68 runs off 89 balls. Engelbrecht (35) was trapped by Mahedi. After losing 7 wickets for 185 runs, complete control of the match came to Shakib & Co.’s hands. But in the end, the Netherlands got a collection of 229 runs by batting wildly.
Netherlands – 229/10 (50.0)
Bangladesh – 142/10 (42.2)
Result – Netherlands won by 87 runs
Player of the match – Paul van Meekeren
