India vs Australia (3rd Test)
The visiting side, Australia defeated the hosts India by a big margin at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. On the third day of the third Test, the Aussies secured a win by a massive margin of 9 wickets. Also after 6 years, they won a Test on Indian soil. This is Australia’s 14th win in 55 Tests played on Indian grounds.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat on Wednesday’s first day of the Indore Test. However, his decision has come negatively for his team. India was caught in a spin trap constructed by them.
The Men in Blues were bundled out in the first innings for just 109 runs. The three spinners of the Aussies’ together picked up the wickets of nine of India’s batters. Aussie spinner Matthew Kuhnemann picked up a fifer by bowling brilliantly in the second Test of his career.
Kuhnemann snapped up 5 wickets with only 16 runs in 9 overs for Australia. Nathan Lyon took 3 wickets with 35 runs. Todd Murphy spent 23 runs for 1 wicket.
Using this opportunity, Australia was on the way to taking a big lead in their first innings. But on the second day, the visiting team could not take a big lead after being all out due to a sudden batting collapse. On that day, Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja were on fire and the Kangaroos had a batting collapse. Their dream of taking a big lead got ruined by that. Australia obtained a lead of 87 runs.
The visitors were bowled out for 197 at the start of the second session. The Aussies lost the last 6 wickets for just 11 runs in the first innings. None of the last 5 batters could make double-digit runs. Yadav and Ashwin shared the last 6 wickets equally 3 each. Jadeja took all of the 4 Australian wickets that fell on the first day.
India failed to make a good start well in their second innings. They lost 4 wickets to score 78 runs. Nathan Lyon took 3 wickets for 27 runs. Kuhnemann took the rest.
Nathan Lyon has set the record for taking the highest wicket against India as a spinner on this day. He broke the record of Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan by taking 108 wickets. Muralitharan took 107 wickets against India.
Being trailed by 88 runs, India was again caught in the spin net of the Aussies in the second innings. Nathan Lyon single-handedly crushed India’s strong batting line-up. The right-arm spinner single-handedly took eight wickets bowling 23.3 overs. And with that, this spin wizard enclosed the game with a total of 11 wickets in two innings. Kuhnemann and Mitchell Starc got one wicket each.
Cheteshwar Pujara stretched the Indian innings single-handedly in the second innings. Keeping one end safe, the right-handed batsman scored 59 runs alone. Shreyas Iyer scored 26 runs in 27 balls in the procession of losing wickets. Besides, no one from the home side could score more than 16 runs. India’s second innings ended at 167 runs. Australia’s target was 76 runs in the last innings as a result of that.
Usman Khawaja departed before adding any runs to the scoreboard on the third day today. Khawaja was caught behind on the delivery of Ashwin while playing defensively. Then the two Australian batsmen Travis Head and Marnus Labuchen calmly took the team to the port of victory. Head remained unbeaten on 49 off 53 balls and Labuschenne on 28 off 58 balls.
With this win of the visiting side, the four-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series is at 2-1. These two teams will meet in the last match of the series on March 9.
