On August 1, 2024, in Southampton, Southern Brave defeated Manchester Originals by seven wickets with 22 balls remaining in the Hundred Men’s Competition.
Manchester Originals scored 116 for 6, with Wayne Madsen top-scoring with an unbeaten 43. Craig Overton led Southern Brave’s bowling attack with figures of 2 for 11, earning him the Player of the Match award. Southern Brave chased down the target of 117, reaching 117 for 3 in 78 balls, with Alex Davies and Laurie Evans contributing crucial runs to secure the victory.
Southern Brave’s bowlers delivered an exceptional performance to secure a commanding seven-wicket victory over the still winless Manchester Originals at the Utilita Bowl. The Originals were restricted to 116 for 6, and the hosts, sans the rested Jofra Archer, chased down the target with 22 balls to spare in front of a crowd of 10,337 fans.
Craig Overton led the bowling attack with figures of 2 for 11 from his 20 balls, supported by England duo Tymal Mills and Chris Jordan, who each took two wickets. Brave opener Alex Davies set the tone for the chase, scoring 24 off 12 balls, while Laurie Evans wrapped it up with an unbeaten 25 from 15 balls.
This victory propelled Brave to join four teams with four points at the top of the table, whereas the Originals, missing injured skipper Jos Buttler, remained at the bottom.
Brave’s captain James Vince chose to bowl first, wary of potential rain, but the bowling unit’s stellar performance ensured the match concluded well before any wet weather could intervene. Craig Overton swiftly dismissed openers Phil Salt and Max Holden, leaving the Originals at 16 for 2 after the 25-ball powerplay.
Veteran batter Wayne Madsen tried to anchor the innings with an unbeaten 43 off 37 balls, finding some support from Jamie Overton. The duo added 57 valuable runs after the Originals slumped to 41 for 4 at the halfway mark, with Jamie Overton hitting one of the only two sixes of the innings. Mills then bowled Jamie Overton with a slower ball, and Usama Mir hit his stumps to end a lackluster innings.
Davies gave Brave a rapid start, smashing 24 off 10 balls before Vince had even faced a delivery. Tom Hartley dismissed Davies, who chipped a catch to Paul Walter, but steady contributions in the 20s from Vince and Leus du Plooy ensured Brave stayed ahead of the required rate. Evans and James Coles saw the team home, with a misfield allowing the winning runs.
