Oval Invincibles secured a pivotal victory in their title defense, defeating Southern Brave by six wickets in a top-of-the-table clash at The Kia Oval. This win, marked by a disciplined bowling performance and a solid, if at times curious, batting effort, puts the Invincibles closer to the knockout stages.

Tom Curran was the star with the ball, taking four wickets, while his younger brother Sam chipped in with two, helping restrict Southern Brave to a modest 118 for eight. The chase that followed was unusual, with Dawid Malan enduring a spell of 10 consecutive dot balls, and Chris Jordan impressively not conceding a run in his first 11 deliveries.

Sam Curran and Jordan Cox, who was just picked up to England’s Test squad, eventually broke free of the early chains, putting together an important partnership of 58 runs from just 27 balls. With 15 balls left, this stand helped the hosts win, demonstrating their tenacity and flexibility.

James Vince was the lone bright spot for the Brave, crafting a well-made 52 from 39 balls as wickets tumbled around him. The victory gave the Invincibles their fifth win in six games, with Sam Curran continuing to play a central role in their success.

Although he secured his third consecutive Meerkat Match Hero award, it was Tom Curran who truly shone with the ball, taking 4 for 24 in front of a lively crowd of 23,948.

The Brave’s innings started poorly, with the visitors collapsing to 31 for four. Sam Curran struck early, dismissing Alex Davies, followed by Tom Curran finding a regulation edge from Andre Fletcher, which was safely held by Sam Billings.

Will Jacks removed Leus du Plooy, while Adam Zampa accounted for Laurie Evans, leaving Brave in a precarious position. Vince tried to steady the ship, adding 58 runs with Kieron Pollard, but Pollard’s departure for 18, caught by Billings off Sam Curran, left Brave reeling.

Tom Curran capped off a brilliant bowling display by taking two wickets in successive balls, removing Jofra Archer and Akeal Hossein, narrowly missing out on a hat-trick as Craig Overton’s shot just escaped the fielders to reach the boundary.

In response, Jacks set the tone by smashing the first ball of the chase for six, but he was dismissed shortly after by Overton. The chase then stalled, with Malan struggling to score, eventually falling for 14 off 31 balls, caught by Archer.

However, Sam Curran and Cox brought the innings back on track, with Curran scoring a quick 35 off 18 balls. Though Hosein managed to dismiss Curran, the damage was done, as Cox finished unbeaten on 46 from 29 balls, guiding the Invincibles to a comfortable win.
