Southern Brave ascended to the top of the table following a dramatic batting collapse by Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston. Phoenix, chasing a target of 170 set by Brave, seemed well-positioned at 92 for 1 after 49 balls. However, they suffered a dramatic downfall, losing 6 wickets for just 12 runs in a span of 25 balls, leading to their defeat.
Both teams entered the match with two wins from three games, but it was Brave’s impressive 169 for 2 – the second-highest score of the season – that ultimately proved insurmountable. Despite Ben Duckett’s valiant 92 for the Phoenix, his teammates failed to provide adequate support, with none managing to score more than 12 runs.
Moeen Ali, the captain of Phoenix, decided to bowl first, and James Vince and Alex Davies gave the visitors a strong starting point. Sean Abbott’s pricey over, which gave 22 runs, helped them reach 81 off 45 balls after they had scored 31 runs in the Powerplay.
Vince and Kieron Pollard took over after Davies was caught by Jacob Bethell off Benny Howell and Leus du Plooy could only get nine from nine balls before being caught by Bethell as well. Pollard made a solid 38 from 22 balls, but Vince’s undefeated 90 from 47 balls featured six fours and six sixes.
In their response, Phoenix looked to Duckett, who seemed poised to single-handedly steer them to victory. He quickly reached a half-century from just 21 balls, with Phoenix reaching 92 for 1 from 49 balls, keeping the game evenly poised.
However, the tide turned with a tight over from Chris Jordan, culminating in Liam Livingstone’s dismissal, caught by du Plooy at point. This sparked a catastrophic collapse for Phoenix, who lost five wickets for just five runs in 18 balls. The formidable Brave bowling lineup, featuring Jordan, Craig Overton, Jofra Archer, Akeal Hosein, and Tymal Mills, proved too much to handle.
Duckett’s valiant effort included eight fours and five sixes, but his teammates managed a mere four fours collectively. This lack of support ultimately sealed Phoenix’s fate, handing Southern Brave a decisive victory.
Southern Brave – 169/2 (100/100 balls)
