In this article, we will discuss the Cricket Highlights of the T20 World Cup 2024 match between Namibia and Oman on June 2. The cricketing world just witnessed a thrilling encounter at Providence Stadium. Namibia set a modest target, and Oman, in a dramatic comeback, took the match to a Super Over.
The tension was palpable as David Wiese’s batting brilliance set a high bar for Oman. Despite a valiant effort from Oman’s batsmen, Namibia’s composed bowling under pressure secured them a nail-biting victory. The match, filled with twists and turns, showcased the unpredictable excitement of T20 cricket.
Oman staged a remarkable comeback with the ball after being bowled out for a mere 109, taking the match against Namibia to a Super Over. However, Namibia regained composure to win the one-over eliminator, kicking off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a victory.
Namibia elected to field, and Ruben Trumpelmann set the tone by trapping Kashyap Prajapati LBW with a full swinging delivery on the first ball. He replicated this feat against Oman’s new captain Aqib Ilyas, hitting him on the foot with another inswinger.
Though Trumpelmann couldn’t achieve a hat-trick or replicate his three-wicket first over from the 2021 T20 World Cup against Scotland, he struck again in his next over. This time, a length ball bounced unexpectedly, causing Naseem Khushi to miscue a catch to mid-off.
Oman’s Zeeshan Maqsood tried to stabilize their innings with a series of boundaries, helping them reach 36 runs by the end of the powerplay. However, his counterattack was short-lived as Bernard Scholz trapped him LBW in the seventh over.
With Scholz and Erasmus taking charge, Oman’s scoring rate plummeted, managing just five runs in the two overs following the powerplay. Ayaan Khan then broke the shackles with a six off Scholz, and Khalid Kail followed with a four off Erasmus to start the tenth over.
Namibia’s bowlers then tightened their grip, delivering 44 boundary-free balls and conceding just 29 runs in that period, which led to the fall of two crucial wickets. Ayaan Khan was caught at long-off off Erasmus, who then trapped Mohammad Nadeem LBW in his next over.
Oman attempted a late surge, but Wiese and Trumpelmann closed the innings effectively, with Wiese taking two wickets in an over, finishing with three wickets overall. Chasing a modest total, Namibia’s batsmen also found the pitch challenging.
Jan Frylinck anchored Namibia’s chase, bringing the equation to 18 runs needed off the final three overs. Mehran Khan bowled the 18th over, starting with four byes, then dismissed JJ Smit and delivered three consecutive dots to Wiese.
In the last over, with Namibia needing just five runs, Mehran bowled Frylinck off his pads for a 48-ball 45. He then bowled a dot to the new batter, Zane Green, who missed an attempted scoop and was out LBW.
A single brought Wiese on strike with four needed off two balls, but he could only manage a straight drive that hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end for two. Mehran then switched his length, and Wiese missed, allowing a single off a ricochet that could have resulted in a run-out.
In the Super Over, Wiese started with a powerful cover drive off a full delivery. He followed it with a six off a full toss, sending the ball wide of long-on. Erasmus contributed with a flick-sweep for four and squeezed a yorker past short third to set a high Super Over score.
Bowling the Super Over, Wiese conceded just two runs off his first two deliveries and then bowled Naseem Khushi. Oman managed only a single off the next ball, as Wiese successfully closed out the win, joining the elite list of players who have both batted and bowled in a Super Over in men’s T20Is.
This thrilling encounter marked the third instance of a men’s T20 World Cup game extending to a Super Over, the first occurrence since 2012. David Wiese and Gerhard Erasmus led Namibia’s charge against Oman’s seasoned bowler Bilal Khan, amassing 21 runs, before Wiese sealed the deal, preventing Oman from orchestrating another comeback.
