Papua New Guinea vs Uganda (Match 09) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the Cricket Highlights of the T20 World Cup, featuring Uganda’s historic clash against Papua New Guinea (PNG) on June 5th, 2024. The cricketing world has just witnessed a gripping contest at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Uganda achieved their maiden T20 World Cup victory in a low-scoring thriller, overcoming a dramatic collapse to chase down PNG’s modest target

The decisive innings of Riazat Ali Shah and the superb bowling of Harshit Rana in those final overs made Uganda’s prevail all the more spectacular. Assad Vala, the leader of PNG, gave it whatever he had, but he was unable to steer his team to success in the final over.

Uganda secured their first-ever T20 World Cup victory with a thrilling three-wicket win over Papua New Guinea (PNG) in Guyana. The match was a low-scoring affair, with PNG batting first and collapsing to 77 all out. Uganda also struggled initially, falling to 26 for 5, but managed to clinch the win in the 19th over.

An important player in the chase was Riazat Ali Shah, one of Uganda’s emerging stars. Uganda able to get through the hazardous scenario thanks to Shah’s prudent batting, collecting 33 off 56 balls with a low backlift before they fell just short of the target. PNG’s miserable batting performance was further aggravated by their 15 wides, resulting in Uganda’s chase a lot simpler.

The highlight of the evening was Uganda’s exceptional bowling in PNG’s innings. The experienced Frank Nsubuga, aged 43, and the young Juma Miyagi, 21, delivered superb spells. Nsubuga’s economic figures of 4-2-4-2 set a new T20 World Cup record for the most economical spell of four overs.

He also joined Ajantha Mendis as one of the few bowlers to deliver 20 dot balls in a T20 World Cup match. Alpesh Ramjani provided an early breakthrough by dismissing PNG’s left-handed Assad Vala with a delivery that angled in from around the wicket.

Miyagi and Cosmas Kyewuta put relentless pressure, with Miyagi forcing Roger Mukasa to make a left-handed Sese Bau catch mid-off. After that, Kyewuta claimed the much-coveted wicket of Tony Ura. PNG’s leading T20I run-scorer, who also fell to Mukasa. Lega Siaka’s run out in the seventh over further hampered PNG’s efforts, as he succumbed to the pressure of playing dot balls.

PNG’s defense began strongly with Alei Nao removing Mukasa for a second consecutive duck in the first over. Norman Vanua then struck twice, dismissing Robinson Obuya and Simon Ssesazi, reducing Uganda to a precarious 6 for 3.  Alpesh Ramjani offered some resistance with a boundary, but Soper soon had him bowled. PNG captain Vala’s caught-and-bowled dismissal of Dinesh Nakrani left Uganda reeling, but Ramjani and Riazat Ali Shah’s partnership began to stabilize the innings.

Despite Uganda’s shaky start, a pivotal moment came when Amini dropped Riazat on eight, a simple chance that proved costly for PNG. Riazat then struck his only boundary in the 11th over off Vala, and his partnership with Miyagi added a crucial 35 runs for the sixth wicket. Miyagi’s run out in the 14th over could have been a turning point, but Riazat remained composed.

PNG’s fielding woes continued as Bau dropped Kenneth Waiswa on four. Although Riazat was eventually dismissed in the 18th over, John Kariko’s catch at third-man came too late to prevent Uganda’s victory. This historic win marked a significant milestone for Uganda in their T20 World Cup journey.
