Multan Sultans secured their first victory in PSL, triumphing over Lahore Qalandars by 33 runs in a thrilling high-scoring encounter at Multan Cricket Stadium on Tuesday night.

Yasir Khan, the Multan Sultans’s opening batsman, had a spectacular season-opening 87-run performance. His performance provided a solid foundation for the team’s mammoth total of 228-5, the highest score ever at the Multan Cricket Stadium in PSL history. The innings was further bolstered by quick runs from skipper Mohammad Rizwan (32), who formed a vital opening stand of 89 runs with Yasir in just 45 balls. After the loss of Rizwan, Yasir continued his attacking ways, adding a swift 70-run partnership with Usman Khan (39) in just 38 balls. Iftikhar Ahmed then capped the batting dominance with a fiery 40* from 18 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes to help the Sultans reach their formidable total.

In reply, LQ faced a struggle early in the chase. They lost Mohammad Naeem cheaply, dismissed by Michael Bracewell in the fourth over for just 11. Fakhar Zaman, the experienced opener, tried to lead the charge with a quickfire 32 off just 14 balls, including three sixes and two fours. However, his dismissal at deep midwicket by Ubaid Shah left the Qalandars at 49-2 after five overs. The early wickets and tight bowling from Bracewell and Ubaid halted Qalandars’ progress, with the team losing momentum in the middle overs.

Usama Mir also contributed with the ball, dismissing Rishad Hossain for just two runs, leaving the Qalandars needing a daunting 118 from just 52 balls. Despite some resistance from the middle-order, it seemed unlikely they could reach the target. A brief revival came in the form of a sixth-wicket partnership between Sam Billings (43) and Sikandar Raza (50*), who put on 38 runs in 22 balls. However, Billings’ dismissal, caught by Kamran Ghulam off Ubaid’s bowling, turned the tide in favor of the Sultans.

Raza kept going strong with an aggressive 50* off 27 balls, but his efforts were not enough to take the Qalandars across the line. The lower-order failed to deliver the big hits needed for a late charge. Despite Raza’s fighting knock, the Qalandars were restricted to 195-9 in their allotted 20 overs, falling short by 33 runs. Ubaid Shah was the standout bowler for the Sultans, picking up three wickets for 37 runs, while Bracewell and Usama Mir each claimed two wickets, playing crucial roles in the middle overs.

For the Qalandars, their bowlers struggled to contain the Sultans’ batsmen. The pacers had a tough time in the field, giving away 142 runs in their 10 overs with just one wicket to show for their efforts. Asif Afridi, who was the most economical of the bowlers, finished with figures of 1-26 from four overs. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain was also among the wickets, taking two for 45 runs, but the damage had already been done by the Sultans’ aggressive batting.

In summary, it was a dominant all-round performance by Multan Sultans, with Yasir Khan leading the charge with the bat and Ubaid Shah’s fine bowling helping them defend a massive total. The Qalandars, despite a valiant effort from their top and middle order, fell short in their chase, and the Sultans emerged as deserving winners by 33 runs.
